CHINATOWN AND CHATUCHAK MARKET IN BANGKOK

February 25, 2018

First day in Bangkok, we checked out the famous weekend market – Chatuchak Market AKA JJ Market.

Chatuchak Market

Chatuchak Market is quite a popular location with locals and tourists as there were so many people around but it was so much fun! I heard it is the biggest market in Bangkok and one of the best local hotspots to buy low-priced quality goods from the thousands of stalls and shops within the market. We were super excited to check out all kinds of fashion, food and antiques and this was our chance for great bargains! There were so many beautiful floral shirts and nice Thai design stuffs and also found some cool vintage stores selling worn-out converse in different colours! There was an endless range of items people can buy including books, food, plants flowers and flowers and practically anything you would expect from a local market. It just made me want to go back again for a serious shopping spree as you can wander around for hours. Oh, did I mention that the prices are so cheap? After all, it is why so many tourists come here-to shop inexpensively! The day was so hot, so we didn’t want to carry many shopping bags for our next spot, so we didn’t get to buy anything at the market.

Tips:

  • Try to go in the morning when there are not many people!
  • While you can save a few coins with a great deal, make sure you don’t go overboard and keep your luggage weight and space in mind!
  • It can be quite difficult to distinguish the difference from fake and authentic items so be careful when you are buying, especially antiques. Genuine antiques require a permit to be taken out of the country and you may also need a permit for fakes one too!
  • Take note of stall number locations if you want to come back again later otherwise it can be hard to find the stall again.

From Chatuchak Market to Chinatown

The perfect way to spend your day as a tourist is to go shopping at Chatuchak in the morning, and then have dinner at Chinatown. Perhaps the most recommended mode of transportation would be to take a taxi as it will take around 30-40 minutes travel time depending on the traffic.

Bangkok’s Chinatown, which is located at Yaowarat Road and Charoenkrung Road, is one of the popular tourist attractions in Bangkok and the place you want to be for amazing street foods including seafood, dim sum, oyster omelets, noodles and exotic fruits. As the Chinatown in Bangkok used to be where Chinese immigrant lived since the late 18th century, the Chinese influence and culture is quite evident and something that is quite exhilarating to experience as a tourist. From seeing the largest gold Buddha in the world with your own eyes in Wat Tramit to the nightlife in Yaowarat Road, it’s no surprise why Bangkok has one of the largest and popular Chinatowns in the world.

It started to rain so heavily on Saturday, so the whole station was so packed with tourists and people who just came out from JJ weekend market! Look at these cute pink buses in Bangkok! Adding so many colours to this big city! Loving it!

I am carrying Alexander Wang Survival Kit bag, Rayban retro style sunglasses and the tropical printed suites here.

It was a little bit crazy eating at Chinatown at the night market. We had to wait for a table for a while! The food were so delicious! We spent less than 1500THB (less than $50) for three people with lots of yummy seafood!

Talking about accommodation, we picked the Ivy River Condo from Airbnb during our Bangkok stay, it was so cheap, only $50 per night for a one-bedroom apartment, with a 30 meters outdoor pool and a huge gym, I am updating it daily on my Insta-stories. It is a private, quite condo with 7-11 right outside, but it is a little bit far out of the city, it took us 10 minutes to get to BTS station by Uber! And the massage cross the street isn’t very good. 🙁
