It is not always true when they say “you only need half a day to explore there”, such as places like Chefchaouen or Galle fort. It looked so beautiful (and so different from any other time of the day) when Lily and I went there at sunrise when the whole village was empty, and we took photos the whole morning around The Blue Pearl village untill all the tourists suddenly come afterwards. We really wished we could spent more time there, 2 days were not even enough for us to explore all the hidden laneways.
So Adam and I decided to “do it again” when we heard ” you only need a few hours there” for Galle Dutch fort.
Recognised by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – UNESCO, Galle fort is an iconic place more about the history than surprises within the laneways. But if you pick the right time, you will be able to see something quite different than many other tourists’ one flash. In the early morning, you can enjoy the entire place alone, it is so quiet and relaxing – Walking along the beach where the famous light house is, bathing under the sunrise, witnessing local people swimming or fishing. At hotel Amangalla, you can enjoyvery traditional and fresh afternoon tea. Not a tea drinker? How about the fastest wifi within the whole Galle Fort area!? They tend to give that wifi access to hotel guests only, so make sure you ask kindly, or not, well I got it. Alternatively, book a relaxing spa and massage before dinner in town at Ceylon Spa, it is perfect for relaxing, but I felt it is not intense enough for me!
You also have lots of other options to stay “near” Galle Fort rather than inside it, as there are not many night activities in Galle fort:
Tri Lanka hotel: 45 minutes from Galle Fort
KK Beach Hotel (right next to the Sea Turtle Hatchery Centre) 25 minutes from Galle Fort
Owl and The Pussycat hotel 21 minutes from Galle Fort
Dream cabana Unawatuna, Thalpe ( where the big palm swing is) 19 minutes from Galle Fort
The Isle of Thalpe ( the hotel next to the big palm swing) 19 minutes from Galle Fort
The traditional transportation you will use a lot, a tuktuk.
You will see lots of white european style buildings in Galle fort.
Love Sri Lankan people! They are so friendly and nice!

Tuktuk waiting for tourists at the famous UNESCO recognised location.
photo above: The Bungalow, the people who work there are super nice, but you can hear people next door quite clearly. The accomodations in Galle Fort are comparably high comparing to other places in Sri Lanka, so that is another reason to stay the night out of Galle fort. We went to have dinner in Galle fort at night, it was super quiet, not many people are around.
photo above: outside our hotel, the Bungalow, you can get free bikes here at the hotel, so you can explore the Galle fort easily.
